Our Signature Joint Keynote
If you’ve spent time in medical spaces online, you may have seen Will and Kristin Flanary. Under the moniker Dr. Glaucomflecken, Will creates medical satire videos for an audience of millions, and hosts a healthcare comedy podcast with Kristin, aka Lady Glaucomflecken. But behind the scenes, their story goes a lot deeper.
By the time Will was 35, he had suffered two cancer occurrences and a sudden cardiac arrest. Kristin was there through it all, taking on the unexpected roles of caregiver and co-survivor… and the life-altering trauma of performing 10 minutes of CPR to save his life while their children slept in the next room. But while Will could easily explain to people what he’d gone through, words didn’t yet exist for Kristin’s experience, leaving her feeling isolated and forgotten – until she stumbled across the concept of co-survivorship.
Together, Will and Kristin experienced more medicine than some do in a lifetime – but they’ve used their unique perspectives, creativity, and humor to advocate for a more compassionate, humanity-centered healthcare system. If you’ve ever resonated with the phrase “laughter is the best medicine”, their shared story of life, near-death, medicine, and humor is a can’t miss.
Audience Takeaways
Learn about the lifesaving impact of bystander CPR and its role in emergency response.
Understand the benefits of using humor as a coping mechanism and tool for connection.
Recognize the effect that witnessing medical trauma has on co-survivors and bystanders.
Dr. Glaucomflecken Keynotes
As a practicing ophthalmologist and a survivor of two cancer occurrences and a sudden cardiac arrest, Dr. Will Flanary knows a thing or two about trying to survive American healthcare. So, he started creating comedy about it under the moniker of Dr. Glaucomflecken.
Millions have followed Will for his humorous videos that satirize the US healthcare system, poke fun at the complex workplace dynamics in the medical world, and get honest about clinician burnout and mental health. What started as a silly hobby became a real platform – and an opportunity for advocacy. Together with his wife Kristin, he has developed and shared educational resources that teach clinicians more about topics like ethical social media use, navigating health insurance as a medical worker, and bringing more compassion into the healthcare world.
Keynote Topics
Social Media For The Medical Professional: More institutions are understanding that social media can be a powerful networking and educational tool for clinicians, but official guidance hasn’t quite caught up. This talk provides practical, common-sense insights from a doctor-creator who’s done it all before.
Surviving The US Healthcare System: A breakdown of the key issues in American healthcare that have lead to problems like limited access to treatment, a patient experience that can feel more traumatizing than healing, and pressures that leave clinicians dealing with burnout, fatigue, and negative mental health outcomes. And more importantly – how we can fix it.
Ophthalmology For Non-Ophthalmologists: Like many specialties, ophthalmologists don’t tend to venture outside their own small corner of medicine. If you’ve long forgotten that one lecture back in med school, or have questions about this tiny portion of the body, this talk has you covered.
Lady Glaucomflecken Keynotes
Kristin Flanary (aka Lady Glaucomflecken) has been “married to medicine” for her entire adult life; standing beside her husband Will through his medical training, a silly hobby of making medical jokes… and two cancer occurrences. She thought she’d seen it all – but nothing prepared her for the experience of waking up to her husband dying beside her while their children slept in the next room.
With the help of only a 911 operator on the phone, Kristin performed 10 minutes of CPR that kept Will alive until paramedics arrived. His survival was an immense relief, but she was still left trraumatized by the experience. While she struggled to process what had happened, she found herself feeling isolated, forgotten, and needing support that the healthcare system wouldn’t provide.
In her poignant keynote speech, Kristin delivers an immersive and poignant example of what bystanders, co-survivors, and the families of patients go through during crisis – and more critically, provides insight into the ways pre-hospital and hospital systems could better meet their needs.
Audience Takeaways
Recognize the physical, psychological, and emotional impacts of bystander CPR.
Understand the role of co-survivors and the lasting effects of witnessing medical trauma.
Learn practical ways to support co-survivors and bystanders that you can use immediately.
