Yes! Behind the scrubs is Dr. Will Flanary, a real-life, board-certified ophthalmologist with a passion for humor, advocacy, and exposing the absurdities of the U.S. healthcare system. By day, he treats patients and operates on eyes. By night (and occasionally between patients), he creates sketches, writes blog posts, and records a podcast that reflects both the hilarious and heartbreaking aspects of medicine.
It’s not just a made-up word that sounds like a cartoon villain—it’s actually a real medical term. Glaukomflecken (yes, technically spelled with a “k”) refers to small, gray-white deposits on the lens of the eye that can occur in acute angle-closure glaucoma. Dr. Flanary encountered the term in residency, found it hilarious (as one does), and adopted it as his comedy persona. Because nothing says “comedy gold” like ocular pathology.
Lady Glaucomflecken (aka Kristin Flanary) is the powerhouse behind the words, bringing lived caregiver experience, sharp humor, and advocacy to every sentence. If you’re interested in commissioning an article, op-ed, or guest blog post, use the contact form and let us know what you’re envisioning. If she is booked, we can see what Dr. G’s loyal scribe, Jonathan, can put together.
We speak together and separately at all kinds of events. Medical conferences, executive retreats, commencement ceremonies, holiday parties, or 15-hour neurosurgery cases (because sometimes you need a little comic relief in the middle of surgery).
Our speaking fees vary depending on several factors: whether you book one or both of us, whether travel is involved, the size and scope of the event, and how much caffeine we’ll need to stay awake. The best way to get a quote is to contact us through the form. We’ll chat about your event and tailor something that fits your needs.
Dr. Glaucomflecken’s YouTube channel is the best place to find his videos.

We love working with good humans on projects that inform, entertain, or create positive change in healthcare. If you have a collaboration idea—whether it’s a campaign, content partnership, live event, or research project—send it our way via the contact form. If it’s a good fit and we have the capacity, we’ll be in touch.
The characters are fictional, but inspired by decades of collective trauma (and love) from working in medicine. If you’ve ever met a passive-aggressive ophthalmologist, an overconfident med student, or a pager-happy hospital administrator… well, you’ll feel seen. We exaggerate for comedic effect, but the emotions are real.
Yes, Dr. Flanary continues to practice ophthalmology. He still operates, sees clinic patients, and does real doctor things—although now he occasionally gets recognized mid-cataract surgery (awkward but appreciated).
With a lot of coffee, teamwork, and shared trauma. We believe humor can be a powerful tool for change. Comedy opens the door, advocacy walks through it, and storytelling keeps people listening. The Glaucomflecken universe is our way of helping people feel less alone in the chaos.
Absolutely, as long as you credit the source and don’t edit the content. We love when our videos are used in med schools, conferences, or training sessions. Just please don’t put “Dr. Glaucomflecken” in Comic Sans.

If you’re a clinician who’s curious about building an online platform without selling your ethics or your soul, I’d love to know more about the questions you have. Here’s a quick survey you can take below to let me know your thoughts.
With your questions in mind, we’ve been workshopping some ways to share our knowledge about medical content creation and all the ethics, business, and mental health stuff that goes along with it. If you’re curious about managing a social media platform as a public-facing healthcare professional, I think you might find it interesting – and more importantly, really helpful.
